What XERF Skin Tightening Can Do for a Softening Jawline and Neck
You see a photo taken from the side, and your jawline has lost its edge.
You catch your neck in the car mirror, and it looks looser than you remember.
You'd like firmer skin, but not needles or days away from your life.
You're simply not ready for anything surgical.
XERF is a radiofrequency skin tightening device. It sends heat through the surface of your skin into its deeper layers, with no needles.
If you have mild to moderate sagging skin, here’s what you may notice:
- Firmer, tighter-looking skin on your face, jawline, and neck, as the heat prompts new collagen
- No needles and, for most people, no numbing, because each pulse comes with a burst of cooling that protects the surface
- Most daily activities right away, with any redness, swelling, or bruising usually gone within hours to a couple of weeks
- A tighter feel right after, and more change over the following weeks and months as collagen builds
- A gradual change that looks natural, without surgery
Three months after two treatments, 92% of the 39 people in one study were rated improved by their clinicians.
How XERF Works, and Whether It Suits You
XERF warms the deeper layers of your skin with radiofrequency energy, while the surface stays cool. Your body answers by building new collagen, so the treated skin firms and contracts gradually over time.
We believe in honest recommendations, so we suggest XERF only when it’s the right fit. Non-invasive tightening works best with mild sagging, and its results are modest and natural-looking.
That’s why your consultation starts with your skin. How much laxity you have decides whether XERF fits, or whether another option would do more.
A few things set XERF apart:
- The energy goes in through intact skin, with no openings
- Two radiofrequency frequencies in each pulse, for heat at more than one depth
- Interchangeable tips in several sizes for different areas

XERF for Your Face, Jawline, and Neck, and Other Skin Tightening Options
- Your face, where skin looks less firm than it did
- Your jawline and jowls, where the edge has softened
- Your neck, where skin has started to look looser
XERF is one of several ways we tighten skin. Sofwave ultrasound skin tightening also uses no needles, while Morpheus8 RF microneedling works through tiny needles.
When sagging is more marked, Dr. Chow may talk with you about our FaceTite procedure, the MyEllevate neck lift, or a PDO thread lift. Which suits you depends on your laxity and how much time off you can take.
Your XERF Treatment, From Consultation to the Days After
It starts with a consultation. We look at your skin and your health history, then set your plan with you.
Next comes the treatment. You'll feel warmth with each pulse, then a burst of cooling, and most people need no numbing.
Your skin feels tighter right away. Any redness usually fades within hours.
You go back to most of your day. If an event is coming up, know that swelling or bruising can take a week or two to fade.
Then the change builds. New collagen forms over the following weeks and months, and results often take three to six months to show.

What Are the Downsides of XERF? Side Effects and Who It Isn't For
Will XERF actually work for me?
What are the side effects, and can XERF burn my skin?
Most people have only mild swelling, bruising, or redness. Redness usually fades within hours, and swelling or bruising can last a week or two.
Less often,non-invasive skin tightening can cause burns, infection, numbness, muscle weakness, allergic or inflammatory reactions, or changes in contour.
That’s why your skin and history are checked first. The device cools the surface with each pulse and monitors temperature as it works, and you’ll leave knowing what to watch for.

Common Questions About XERF Skin Tightening
Is XERF FDA-cleared?
Yes. XERF was FDA-cleared in 2025 for use in skin and general surgical procedures to heat and coagulate tissue. Skin tightening itself isn't named in that clearance. The tightening comes from that controlled heating, which prompts the skin's deeper layers to build new collagen.
How many XERF treatments will I need?
The number of XERF treatments depends on your skin and your goals, and it's set with your plan. In a 39-person study, everyone finished after two sessions a month apart. Some people have one treatment, and some benefit from more. At your consultation, we look at your jawline and neck and plan your sessions with you.
How long do XERF results last?
No study has measured how long XERF results last yet; the published study followed people for three months. For radiofrequency skin tightening in general, results can last two to three years with good skin care. Your skin keeps aging and losing collagen, though, so upkeep sessions are part of many plans.
Does XERF hurt?
XERF feels warm, and each pulse comes with a burst of cooling, so most people need no numbing. People in a 39-person study, treated without numbing, rated their discomfort about 4 out of 10 on average. A session usually takes about 45 minutes, depending on the area treated.
How is XERF different from Morpheus8 or Sofwave?
XERF delivers radiofrequency heat through the skin's surface, with no needles. Sofwave ultrasound skin tightening uses ultrasound energy, also without needles. Morpheus8 RF microneedling sends radiofrequency heat through fine needles, usually as a series. Which fits you depends on how much laxity you have and how much time off you can take, and we match the treatment to you.
Is XERF right for me if I have a lot of sagging?
With a lot of sagging, XERF may not help much; non-invasive tightening works best when sagging is mild to moderate. For more marked laxity, Dr. Chow performs minimally invasive procedures such as our FaceTite procedure and the MyEllevate neck lift. Men come to us for this too, and the same look at how much laxity you have decides whether XERF suits you.
