What Facial Balancing Can Do for Your Chin, Jawline, Cheeks, and Lips
You may know moments like these:
A side-view photo where your chin seems to disappear.
A jawline that looks softer than it used to.
Each feature looks fine, yet together something seems slightly off.
You'd like more shape in your lips, but you're afraid of looking done.
If balancing suits your face, you may notice:
- Features in better proportion with each other: a stronger chin profile, a more defined jawline, more support in your cheeks, or fuller lips, chosen for your face. Several fillers are FDA-approved for these areas.
- A change you see right away, with swelling and tenderness that mostly settle within about two weeks
- Hyaluronic acid filler that can be dissolved with an enzyme if a change isn't right.

One patient's result, chin treated with filler. Individual results vary.

One patient's result, jawline treated with filler. Individual results vary.
How Dr. Chow Plans Facial Balancing Around Your Whole Face
Balance doesn’t come from more filler. It comes from proportion: how your chin, jawline, cheeks, lips, and nose look against each other.
A stronger chin, for instance, can make the nose look smaller, and the reverse is true too.
Dr. Chow’s aim is bringing out the natural beauty already in your face. She looks at you from the side and from the front, may take photos to plan from, and tells you which change would do the most, or that you don’t need one.
What you can count on here:
- One plan for your whole face, rather than one feature at a time
- A conservative amount, placed where proportion needs it, with more only if you want it
- A filler chosen for each area, from the several filler families we carry

Chin, Jawline, Cheek, and Lip Filler for Facial Balancing
Here’s what filler does in each area, and its FDA status:
brings a chin that sits back forward. Fillers from the Juvéderm filler family and the Restylane filler family are FDA-approved for the chin in adults over 21.
adds definition along a softened jaw. Fillers from the Juvéderm filler family and the Radiesse filler family are FDA-approved for jawline definition in adults over 21.
supports flat cheeks. Fillers from the Juvéderm, Restylane, and RHA families are FDA-approved here. For hollow cheeks, see facial volume loss treatment.
adds fullness and shape, with fillers from those three families FDA-approved for lips. See lip enhancement with Dr. Chow.
Your Facial Balancing Appointment and Recovery, Step by Step
It starts with what bothers you. You tell Dr. Chow what you notice.
Next, Dr. Chow studies your face. She looks at your profile and your face from the front, then plans the areas and the amount with you.
Then Dr. Chow places the filler herself, using the one chosen for each area.
Over the next two weeks, things settle. Swelling, tenderness, small lumps, or bruising where the filler went mostly fade by then.

Dr. Chow, the Physician Who Places Your Filler Herself
Dr. Chow trained as a physician first, with a medical degree from Shanghai Medical College and an anesthesiology residency at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She has been licensed as a physician in Missouri since 2000.
In 2018 she founded our practice in Lee’s Summit, believing a physician’s training belongs behind every aesthetic treatment. She still leads it as owner and medical director.
That’s why she plans and places every filler here herself, with the artistic precision a face in proportion asks for.

Can Facial Balancing Go Wrong? Risks and Who Should Wait
It’s a fair question. Most side effects of filler are mild and settle within about two weeks, and the serious risks are uncommon. Before anything is placed, Dr. Chow looks at your whole face and plans a conservative amount.

What if I end up looking overdone?
The aim is a face in proportion that still looks like you, so your plan starts with the smallest change that does the most.
Tell Dr. Chow exactly what worries you, whether it’s looking done or losing what you like about your face, and the plan starts there. A conservative start can build over more than one visit, and only if you want more.
What side effects are normal after filler?
Most are mild: tenderness, swelling, firmness, small lumps, bruising, or redness where the filler went. They mostly settle within about two weeks.
If a change isn’t right, hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme. Using the enzyme this way is off-label, and calcium-based and collagen-stimulating fillers can’t be dissolved.

Common Questions About Facial Balancing
How long does facial balancing with filler last?
Facial balancing with filler lasts from several months to a few years, depending on the filler and on you. Most fillers are temporary, because your body slowly breaks them down. In studies of chin and jawline filler, more than half of treated patients still had their improvement about a year later. When the effect fades, treatment can be repeated.
How many syringes does facial balancing take?
Facial balancing has no set number of syringes. The count follows how many areas you treat and how much change you want, and Dr. Chow plans it with you at your consultation. Even in a study of chin filler alone, the amount used varied widely from one patient to the next.
Is facial balancing done in one visit or several?
Facial balancing can be done in one visit or in stages. A plan can start conservatively and build only if you want more. In studies of chin and jawline filler, patients could come back for a touch-up visit after their first treatment, and Dr. Chow sets the pace with you.
Can filler change the shape of my nose?
Yes. Dr. Chow does non-surgical rhinoplasty with filler, which can smooth the look of a small bump or dip and straighten the look of your profile. Filler can't make a nose smaller or help your breathing. No filler is FDA-approved for the nose, and the FDA recommends against injecting it, so Dr. Chow reviews your nose and history and goes over the risks first.
Is facial balancing the same as Botox?
No. Facial balancing is mostly filler, which adds volume and structure where it's placed. Wrinkle-relaxing injections like Botox soften lines by relaxing the muscle beneath them, and a plan may use both. Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport are FDA-approved for specific lines on the upper face; using them to reshape the jaw, chin, or lips is off-label.
Can my face be balanced without filler?
Sometimes. Balancing can use your own fat instead of filler, and Dr. Chow performs fat transfer to the face. Surgery, such as a chin implant, is a permanent option that a plastic surgeon performs. Men come to Amy Chow, MD Rejuvenation Practice for balancing too, and Dr. Chow builds each plan around his face the same way.
